I Always Wanted a Convertible March 26, 2010

It’s not the problem, it’s how you respond….right?  This is a huge theme in our equine therapy program.  It really doesn’t matter which task you assign for a group, you learn their patterns of communication and ability to solve problems.  The individuals’ willingness to tackle a difficult problem with no obvious and easy solution.

I was returning from Philadelphia where I presented science investigations (lots of stuff that airports might not allow aboard).  My fellow science teacher and my daughter drove with me to PA to present at the national teachers’ conference.  It was lots of fun, blah, blah, blah.

When we arrived, I told the valet at the hotel, “Do not role the driver’s side window down.  It will not come up.  I have 20 hours to go to get home…days on the road…it may rain between here and there….DO NOT ROLE DOWN THE WINDOW.”

“You got it.  I’m glad you told me.”

Three days later, I call for the car and the valet pulls up with the window securely tucked inside the driver’s side door…rolled down all the way.  Besides, it was a gorgeous, sunny day.  I will not cry.  I will not cry.  It’s a beautiful day.  Don’t cry.

I pulled onto the Pennsylvania Turnpike with my window down, everyone’s hair was blowing all over the place, we were unable to hear what anyone was saying.  I kept telling myself, “I can do this.  What would it have been like to settle this country?  The settlers came in wagons and on foot or horseback.  horseback?“  I had to stop there…I would love to have been on horseback right about then….

“I can do this.  I can do this.  I’ve always wanted a convertible.”  There that’s better.  I’ll go with the convertible-pretend.  Wind blowing.  Not a care in the world….I can do this.

Two hours later, after continually playing with the window button, my fingers were raw and sore, the window finally, slowly rose to the very top.  Ahhhhh.  There.

I did it.  Now I know what it would be like to have a convertible.

The Emergency Dismount March 11, 2010

I laughed and teased about learning the emergency dismount at a training I went to recently. When would I ever use that!?!

The Emergency Dismount

Before you get started, you should know how to do an emergency dismount — unfortunately, it is likely that you will have to do one sometime while riding bareback. An emergency dismount is always the best way to go if you feel yourself falling. You are less likely to be hurt.

To emergency dismount, lean forward, drop the reins, slide one leg over the horse’s back, and land on your feet… before you land on your head. You have to do this very quickly, though. Your horse may stop, but he also may keep going. That’s fine. Most likely, you’re in an enclosed area, so he can’t go far.  from WikiHorses

(I had no saddle and no helmet, though my official position is to always ride with a helmet.)

Monday, I needed and used, quite successfully the Emergency Dismount!  I climbed up on Spirit for a nice quick bareback ride and he was ready to go before I had my balance.  I was flopping all over his back.  I knew I was coming off.  My choices were to either flop off his back or dismount using my handy, dandy new skill.

I chose the skill.

I will not make fun of the Emergency Dismount ever again…I will use it with pride and teach it with flourish.

I was rattled and shaken up, but climbed back on and rode for a while.  The next day, I took the time and effort to put his saddle squarely on his back.  It is much easier to hang on that way!

Short-Term Memory…Who Needs It March 1, 2010

Where am I?  What am I doing here?  How did I get here?  (No…I’m not in the Walmart parking lot…this time)

These are the questions my son was asking after a particularly hard hit on the ASU rugby field.  I know…what mother, in her right mind, would allow her son to play rugby.  In the south…with a bunch of rough and tumble college students.  For starters, he’s 18…I guess it ends about there, too.  He’s 18.  How did that happen!  Anyway…

The college students with him did all the right things.  They took him out of the game.  He would not have volunteered that! Someone sat with him and periodically asked him questions.  He had his sense about him pretty quickly.  I don’t think he blacked out, but he did lose his short-term memory for a spell.

When he came home, I told him I would wake him up occasionally and ask him questions just to check on him.

About 3:00 AM I asked him, “In what county do we live?”

“White.”  Yeah!  He’s doing ok.

At 6:00 AM I woke him and asked, “What day is it?”

“The 27th.”  Hmmm….I’ll have to go check. What about….

“Could you tell me the day of the week?”

“Sunday.”  Good.  We’ll leave it there.  I’m not sure what the date is…. Perhaps someone else should be checking his short-term memory.  Mine’s not so great either.

New Liberty Tax Company February 19, 2010

Have you seen the guys that stand on the corner during tax season and wave, dance around, and try to get your attention?

I would drive up to this stoplight and cringe.  I thought it was intrusive and rude.  I couldn’t believe this place of business could get away with this kind of advertising.

However, this tax season, I see these people in a whole new light.  These folks are working.  They are earning money.  The people on the corner dress up in ridiculous costumes and get an amazing workout.  They are cheerful and energetic.  They have found a job!

I’m sure it is tightly connected to my oldest child looking for a job in the past few months….

I have hence been know to give them a wave as I pass by ( much to the embarrassment of some of my passengers).  I still would like to talk to the CEO and help her find a better way to use these employees great enthusiasm, but for now, I will wave and appreciate their willingness to work.  Honking, however, is out of the question…

A Quiet Place February 10, 2010

Sunrise Feb 10, 2010

After numerous snow days with kids traipsing in and out of the house, dogs’ wet noses on the windows, and mud mixed with slush garnishing every doorway, I can appreciate a quiet place.

In Mark 6:31, Jesus saw many people coming and going. He noticed the disciples tending to these people and not taking time to eat. He said to his dear friends, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”

When we look inside the heart of Jesus, we find love and compassion every time.

He cared about those who were sick and dying. He cared about those tending to their needs.

If you find yourself in the role of caretaker, you can be assured that Jesus notices the meals you skip and the late nights you spend caring for others. Quiet places are blessings from him. His words may be for you to come by yourself to a quiet place and get some rest.

What an awesome God we serve.

The arena needed clearing out because rain was coming and I had a session on the rainiest day of the week! So I had to get the hay out and I needed the exercise anyway.

My Exercise Equipment:

Headband from days gone by when I ran around a neighborhood for exercise.

Tennis shoes have been exchanged for boots.

And a pitchfork and gloves completes the outfit! These are awesome gloves…

My exercise buddy:

Not the most enthusiastic of partners….

The Exercise

Take this hay…..

and put it in that truck….

and dump it in that pasture.

Not a whole lot of help.

Tadaaa! I thought it would take about an hour….3 truck loads and 3 hours later…

Completion February 4, 2010

“I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” Philippians 1:3-6

I was struck today by this part  “….that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”  Who will carry on this work to completion?  He will.  God will complete it.  God is faithful.  He will complete what I can not. I’m pretty good at starting things….start the laundry, start the dishes, start a friendship, start an exercise program, start a quilt, start a diet…completing things is not my forte.

God is faithful.  He will complete his work in me.

Praise God!

Snow Day Again! February 2, 2010

When I was growing up in central Arkansas, we only had snow every other year or so.  This has been amazing!

It can be calm and peaceful…..

…or exciting and energizing!

(That is what happens when you spend most of your life in the stall.)

When we bought her, she became a horse…in the pasture

This is probably Spirit’s first time to play in the snow, too.

Notice the snow around his lips.  He ate it off the fence rail.

Trigger, however, has seen it all before.

Nothing like a dingy horse in brilliant snow!

This girl knows what to do!

She learned it from her brothers….

This one built a fort from carefully constructed snow blocks.

This one just wants to get on with the snowball fight….and

he’s not waiting on anyone!

The sun is going down and everyone is headed inside.

Almost everyone….sorry guys.

Here he is.  Part of my bucket list.  I’ve always wanted a horse that would be competitive.  I’ve written previously about my horse show experiences…

He knows so much more than I do!  I can’t wait to get to know him and take him to a show.  He is so beautiful.

This was his first day at home.  He’s checking it all out.  I hope he likes us!

“I would get a lot more out of _______ Church tonight, Dad.”

“Maybe so, son, but we don’t only go to church to ‘get something out of it.’  There are many more reasons.”

“Like what?”

“I’ll tell you on the way to church.”

….on the way to church….

“What are those other reasons, Dad?”

“Church is family.  We’ve made a commitment to those people.  What if I look around and see a child that always says ‘yes, sir’ and ‘no, sir’ and mows the lawn without being asked and loves to wash the car?  I might get a lot more out of that child.  Maybe I’ll trade children…  I’ve made a commitment to my family.  We always stick together.  We are there for each other.  We depend on each other and encourage each other.  My family  needs me.  My family counts on me.  We stay together, warts and all.  Church is family.  I don’t attend just because I get something out of it.  I attend because they are my family.”

–Paraphrased from a ride to church last week–
